‘Ālapa Hoe Canoe Club

Athletic Paddler

Club Colors: Teal & White

(Daniel’s color: Blue • Sheila’s color: Green — combined to create Teal)

‘Ālapa Hoe Canoe Club was founded in October 1993 by Daniel III and Sheila Sanford. What began as a small group of 25 paddlers—close friends and family—marked the start of our journey in perpetuating Hawaiian culture through the art of paddling.

With just a 10x10 club tent and our first wa‘a, Heneli, we entered the competitive world of canoe paddling. As a traveling canoe club, we have proudly participated in long-distance races around the world, including Tahiti, San Francisco, and Lake Tahoe.

Today, we continue to compete in both pre- and post-season long-distance races locally and internationally, including the Queen Lili‘uokalani Race, Nā Wahine O Ke Kai, Moloka‘i Hoe, Nā Pali Challenge, World Sprints, and most recently, Rarotonga.

Welcome paddlers to our 34th year as a canoe club. Let’s paddle hard, compete with heart, and most importantly—let’s have fun. As Coach Daniel always says: “Always have fun… but win.”
